(2023). Educational guidelines for diversity and inclusion: Addressing racism and eliminating biases in medical education. Am J Obstet Gynecol 2023; 228(2):133–139. DOI: 10.1016/j.ajog.2022.09.014 What is this article about? Racism and bias within health care cannot be overlooked. It is not just about the experiences of patients. Only 5-6% of the physician workforce identifies as either Black or Hispanic compared to the US population of 14% and 19% respectively. Therefore, addressing racism and bias in medical education cannot be overstated. This article provides guidelines to help promote diversity and mitigate institutionalized racism and bias in Obstetrics and Gynecology education. These guidelines were developed by the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics (APGO) Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Guidelines Task Force, with the goal of developing an anti-racist, inclusive and equitable method of evaluating educational material. Further still, it is commendable that the task force itself was comprised of a group of APGO medical educators of varying backgrounds. Why should you read the article? The guidelines detailed in this article are intended to be utilized by medical educators. Guidelines provided by the APGO DEI Guidelines Task Force included commentary on inclusive language, antiracist education, bias conscious assessment of learners, and mentorship/academic support for minorities. The article provides a checklist educators may use along with more detail defining each component of the checklist. How can you use this article? The guidelines provided in this article were developed to aid in addressing diversity across medical institutions and can help in developing curricula that respects diversity, equity and inclusion regardless of specialty. Of note, the article provides a nice checklist that can be downloaded for use by medical educators as they review and/or develop new educational materials. The checklist format is particularly helpful in providing a framework for similar interventions outside of obstetrics and gynecology education. The guidelines can also help with recruitment, policy development and faculty training in medical education.
