Neglect as an Undefined and Overlooked Aspect of Medical Student Mistreatment: A Systematic Review of the Literature. Med Teach 2023; 45(12):1395-1403. DOI: 10.1080/0142159X.2023.2218982 What is this article about? This systematic review aims to define medical student neglect, its prevalence, and potential mitigating interventions. The article serves to address an information gap; while medical student mistreatment is well-researched, neglect as a type of mistreatment has not yet been defined in the literature and little information exists about its prevalence and its relationship to medical student well-being. Why should you read the article? Medical student neglect is interconnected with many variables such as individual student identity, relationship with the teacher, and expectations of both learner and teacher. This has many possible consequences, from impacting the quality of medical education to worsening medical student burnout during clinical rotations. This article proposes a definition for neglect which makes it more easily identified in the clinical space and allows educators to examine how the phenomenon influences educational programs. Educators can also focus their efforts on this type of student mistreatment by developing validated tools for measurement to better define its prevalence. How can you use this article? This article is a call to action on many levels. Neglect is the type of mistreatment that is most likely to impact a student’s mental well-being due to its pervasiveness and frequency. Institutions should include neglect when screening students for mistreatment and create interventions to improve the learning environment on clinical rotations. Educators should be aware of neglect and work to make inclusive learning environments. This article can impact day-to-day functioning of health care teams as well as guide systems-level changes.
